Single vehicle rollover - Finke

Police

Finke Police were called to a single vehicle roll over on the Finke access rough 5km east of Kulgera Road House at about 9:00am yesterday.

The 24-year-old female driver and two males aged 23 and 17-years-old were travelling west towards Kulgera in a Holden Commodore Statesman when the crash occurred. It appears the female driver drifted to the outer edge of the road before overcorrecting causing the vehicle to strike an embankment, launch into air for about 8 metres and roll before coming to rest on its roof.

The17-year-old male passenger was ejected during the crash and became trapped under the car, receiving serious injuries. The youth was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Staff from the Finke Medical Clinic attended the scene and the Royal Flying Doctors Service conveyed all occupants to Alice Springs Hospital.

Duty Superintendent Daniel Shean said this was another example of the importance of seatbelts

"This young man is lucky to be alive; if he was wearing a seatbelt his injuries may not have been as severe."

"Please, just wear your seatbelt. If you get caught by police not wearing a seatbelt it is a $400 fine or $480 for the driver where a child is not wearing a seatbelt, conversely, if you crash, you could loose your life".
