Single vehicle crash - Nhulunbuy

Police

NT Police attended a single vehicle crash on the Central Arnhem Highway in Nhulunbuy last night.

Police received the report just before 7:00 pm of a crash approximately 27.2 kilometres along the Central Arnhem Highway from the Melville Bay Road intersection.

Nine people were travelling in a Toyota Landcruiser to Dhalinbuy when it is alleged the 34-year-old male driver hit a winding section of the road and drifted onto the dirt. The driver attempted to correct the vehicle but hit more soft dirt on the other side of the road and spun almost 180 degrees before colliding with a tree.

NT Fire and Rescue members attended the scene and extracted the male drive from the vehicle.

The driver and a 34-year-old female passenger were taken to the Nhulunbuy Hospital by St John Ambulance. The remaining passengers, including five children were conveyed to the hospital as a precaution.

Alcohol was not a contributing factor.

"It appears all persons were wearing their seatbelts which again enforces how important it is to be buckled in" Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said.
