Single vehicle crash - Nakara

Police

Casuarina Police are expecting to charge a Darwin man after attending a single vehicle crash in Nakara last night.

At about 9:40 pm Police, Fire and Rescue and St John Ambulance personnel were called to a crash on Kilfoyle Crescent, where the driver of a Nissan Navara 4x4 had collided with a power pole causing the vehicle to tip onto its side.

Fire and Rescue personnel attempted to cut the sole occupant out of the vehicle through the windscreen, however he refused to exit the car and appeared to be lapsing into unconsciousness. Due to the man's condition a second attempt was made to get him out of the vehicle by extracting him through the roof.

Once out of the vehicle, the 23-year-old man became agitated and had to be restrained by police while St John Ambulance conveyed him to Royal Darwin Hospital.

He did not receive serious injuries in the crash and has since been discharged from RDH.

Police are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the crash, however pending blood results the man is expected to be summonsed in relation to driving under the influence and driving in a dangerous manner offences. Several witnesses informed police they heard a vehicle travelling at a fast speed along the street before hearing a loud bang.

Senior Sergeant Shaun Furniss said it is disappointing to see people continue to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"The crash occurred in a suburban street, with a 50km'h speed limit, there was high potential for an innocent member of the public to be seriously injured or killed as a result of this mans irresponsible behaviour."

"NT Police will not tolerate this behaviour and I urge the public to report irresponsible or reckless road user's to police, in an effort to get these individuals off our roads."

"All involved in this incident did a great job and it is a great example of the emergency responders working together in somewhat difficult circumstances" said Senior Sergeant Furniss.
