A 44-year-old Caucasian man was injured after being shot in the arm by a 12 gauge shotgun at a campsite approximately 10 kilometres north-east of Alice Springs.

The man's 40-year-old Caucasian female companion told police she and the victim had set up camp near a track by the Junction Waterhole turn-off when another vehicle drove up to their campsite just after 6.30pm.

The victim approached the vehicle and had a short conversation with one of the two male occupants. One of men then shot the victim in the arm with a shotgun and the vehicle drove off.

The vehicle is described as being a light-coloured four-wheel-drive with a silver bull bar - possibly a Hilux with a canopy or a Series 100 Landcruiser.

The two occupants are described as being Caucasian males in their 20s with the driver being clean-shaven with fair hair.

Police immediately initiated traffic check points at all roads surrounding Alice Springs.

Detectives from the Regional Investigations Division are investigating and the victim is expected to be spoken to this afternoon.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the incident yesterday to come forward.

Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Dash said the area where the incident occurred is popular with campers and police believe there were other vehicles in the area at the time.

"We are particular keen to speak to the occupants of a yellow Jeep which was passed by the victim's vehicle as they were heading to their campsite around 4pm in the afternoon," Det Senior Sergeant Dash said.

"The occupants of this vehicle may have noticed another car in the area and may be able to give us a description. We are appealing to these people to contact us on 131 444."

Police advise members of the public not to approach the offenders if they are sighted as they may still be armed. Anyone with information should call 000 immediately.
