Police received a report just before 1am of a disturbance at a residence in Jubilee Street, Tennant Creek. A police patrol found the alleged offender walking along Meyers Street suffering what appeared to be a bullet wound in the lower leg.

The man was arrested and taken to the Tennant Creek Hospital for treatment.

Police allege the man assaulted his 46-year-old wife earlier in the night before threatening to shoot himself with a .22 calibre rifle. During the altercation the man allegedly turned the gun on himself and shot one round into his left leg. His wife then tried to assist him and was again assaulted by the man. She was treated at the Tennant Creek Hospital for lacerations to the head and ear.
A .22 calibre rifle has been seized by police.
