Police were alerted just after 7pm tonight that St John Ambulance had received a report of a shooting at the waterhole approximately ten kilometres north of Alice Springs. The 44-year-old victim was taken to hospital with an injury to his left upper arm.

A female witness told police a four-wheel-drive vehicle with two male occupants, drove up to where they had set up camp. The victim went over to talk to the occupants of the vehicle and after a short conversation one of the offenders got out of the vehicle and shot the victim in the arm with a shotgun. He then got back in the vehicle and they drove off.

The vehicle is described as being beige or gold in colour and possibly a 100 series Landcruiser or similar with a silver bull bar. The driver is described as being a fair-haired male of Caucasian appearance, clean-shaven and in his 20s. There is no description of the second male in the car.

Police immediately initiated traffic check points at all roads surrounding Alice Springs.

Detectives from the Regional Investigations Division are investigating and the victim is expected to be spoken to tomorrow after undergoing surgery this evening.

Police advise members of the public not to approach the pair as they may still be armed. Anyone with information should call 000 immediately.
