Police have arrested a 55-year-old male in relation to a sexual assault that occurred in Katherine last night.

Members attended First Street and arrested the 55-year-old alleged offender, after a passer-by contacted police, having heard a woman being assaulted in near by bushes.

Detectives have since charged him with attempted sexual intercourse without consent and aggravated assault.

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Katherine Court tomorrow (20 January).

Detective Sergeant Henrys of the Katherine Investigation Unit said, "The diligent actions by a member of the public and an excellent police response have resulted in the male being caught before the situation became a lot worse."
