Katherine Police are investigating a serious assault on an off duty Police Officer.

The assault occurred at approximately 3am this morning in a nightclub in Katherine.

The officer is currently undergoing emergency surgery to the head at Royal Darwin Hospital having been immediately placed in a medically induced coma in Katherine prior to being medivacced to Darwin.

An alleged offender is currently in custody and police are calling on anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information to contact them on 131 444 or attend Katherine Police Station.

It is believed there were some witnesses who rendered medical assistance at the scene who are also urged to contact Police.

While this incident remains in the early stages of a police investigation, no further details are available at this time.
