Search for missing man – Alice Springs

Police

A search is underway for a man who went missing after being swept from a flooded causeway in Alice Springs overnight.

Police received a report just after 8.30pm that the man and three female companions were walking across the Palm Circuit causeway when he was swept away by flood waters over the road. The three females managed to cross safely.

Police, Fire and Rescue crews and NTES volunteers began a search for the man last night, but the search was suspended just after 10.30 pm when they failed to find any sign of him. The search resumed at first light this morning and currently continues using ground crews and a helicopter with trained police air observers. Ground crews are searching the banks of the river and inquiries are being undertaken at town camps to determine if the man has managed to make it back to safety.

Search co-ordinator Sergeant Anthony Barry said the incident once again highlighted the dangers of people entering causeways or swimming in the river.

"People need to be aware of the force of the water in these circumstances, especially with the amount of rain we have had recently," Sergeant Barry said.

"It is also important to remember there are hidden dangers in the river bed which can easily prove to be fatal obstacles. Once again we urge everyone to stay away from the Todd River while it is flowing and abide by the road closed signs.

"This incident should provide a timely reminder to everyone to take care, especially in light of the recent drownings during flooding of the Sandover River in January and several drownings in recent flood events on the east coast."
