Search and Rescue - Kakadu

Police

NT Police are currently conducting a search at Nourlangie Rock in Kakadu after receiving reports of a missing man over night.

At about 8:00 pm last night a woman reported that her 63-year-old husband had gone on a 12 kilometre walk at around 10:00 am and had not returned. The couple are German Nationals visiting the area and it is believed the man went on the Barrk Stand Stone walk and did not take any water with him in the harsh conditions.

Jabiru Police attended the scene last night while a Care Flight Helicopter conducted air searches of the area.

The search was initiated again at first light this morning involving the Territory Response Group, Jabiru Police, Fire and Rescue members and Parks and Wildlife Park Rangers. A Care Flight Helicopter is also conducting air searches of the area.

Police have closed the entrance road and are urging tourists to avoid the area.

Please contact the Bowali Visitors Centre on 0889381121for current information.

Tourist visiting Kakadu National Park are reminded to remain hydrated, carry sufficient water, wear appropriate hats and clothing to suit the conditions.

Duty Superintendent Rob Burgoyne encourages visitors to plan their walks and site seeing.

"If you become lost or dehydrated don't panic, find a shady area, sit down, relax and wait for the cooler period of the day before continuing your walk. Always try to be with a partner or in a group so if you experience any problems some one can raise the alarm".
