Search and rescue - Bathurst Island

Police

NT Police are currently conducting a search near the Tiwi Islands after receiving a report of a man overboard.

Police received a call at about 9:00 am today after a woman noticed her husband had fallen from their yacht about 4.5 nautical miles south of Bathurst Island near Mitchell Point.

A nearby fishing vessel received the distress call and alerted authorities.

It is believed the 67-year-old male was adjusting the anchor rope during a storm when a wave hit, throwing him into the water. Police have been advised the man is not a strong swimmer.

A police dive team is currently searching the area for the missing person. Emergency Service volunteers along with a number of helicopters are expected to join the search shortly.

NT Police urge the public to take extreme care when out on the water during storms.

"As the wet sets in, it is important to check the weather and forward plan your trip before going out on the water. If the weather changes and storms hit take shelter near the coast and wait it out before travelling into open water".

Updates will be provided as further information becomes available.
