Rock throwing incident - Malak

Police

Police were alerted to the incidents at about midnight after receiving a call from a 23-year-old woman who had rocks thrown at her car while travelling on McMillans Road. It is alleged the offenders damaged three cars after throwing rocks and star pickets at the vehicles from the McMillans Service Road.

Upon police arrival the youths attempted to flee the scene and a short foot chase ensued and they were arrested a short time later on Fawcett Court in Malak.

Two of the youths aged 14 and 16-years-old were released from the Darwin Watch House early this morning and one male aged 14-years-old remains in police custody. The remaining youth was on bail for several property related offences, he was also arrested for breaching bail conditions. He has been remanded in custody after appearing in the Darwin Youth Justice Court today.

The investigations are continuing into last night's incident and the youths will be further interviewed about the offences at a later date.

Senior Sergeant Shaun Furniss said this these youths were extremely irresponsible and this incident could have ended much worse.

"Throwing star pickets at travelling vehicles is beyond belief. The potential for serious injury or death to an innocent road user is extremely high and it was only luck on this occasion that someone was not hurt".

"There are also some serious penalties under the NT Criminal Code Act for intentionally endangering the safety of persons travelling on a roadway. The penalty includes "imprisonment for life". NT Police will not tolerate anyone acting this way" he said.
