Robbery – Alice Springs

Police

Police are investigating an incident last night in which a woman was assaulted as she was riding home from work.

The 29-year-old victim waved down a police patrol in South Terrace near the Imparja building just before midnight. The woman told police she had been riding her bike home from work when she was approached by a young male who was also riding a bicycle. The male tried unsuccessfully to grab her handbag but she continued riding north along South Terrace. The male followed her on his bicycle and caught up with the victim near the Imparja building. He again tried to grab her handbag and when he was unsuccessful he punched her to the mouth. At this moment a police vehicle drove around the roundabout and the offender ran off into the Todd River leaving his bike behind.

The victim told police the alleged offender was in his early teens and was of Aboriginal appearance.

Police are calling for witnesses to come forward, especially the driver of a taxi who drove past the victim as she was being assaulted.

Anyone with information should phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
