Police are urging motorists to drive with caution and check road conditions following heavy rainfall in Central Australia.

Several sections of the Stuart Highway are impassable except for high clearance vehicles, while the Plenty Highway is closed between the Stuart Highway and the Queensland border.

The Tanami Highway is also closed between Tilmouth Well and the Western Australian border.

Motorists are urged to check the road conditions before their trip by phoning the Department of Planning and Infrastructure road conditions hotline 1800 246 199 or check the website at http://www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/roadreport.

It is expected that some causeways in Alice Springs may also have some water over them by this afternoon and motorists are urged to drive with caution.
