River watch –Alice Springs

Police

All causeways in Alice Springs were closed this morning after heavy rain in the catchment area caused the normally dry Todd River to flow.

A River Watch Level B alert was issued by the Regional Counter Disaster Controller around 9.30am when all the low-level causeways were inundated and were closed to traffic. The water continued to rise until peaking at Level C around midday. This caused the closure of the Taffy Pick Crossing and the opening of the Power and Water Road which is the emergency alternate route to the Golf Course estate.

After peaking, the water level has continued to subside and the Taffy Pick Crossing was reopened around 3.30pm. The River Watch is now cancelled, however motorists are still urged to drive with caution as the low-level causeways are not expected to re-open until tomorrow morning.

Residents are advised not to enter the Todd River and motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible to limit traffic congestion.
