Rescue operation a success

Police

A coordinated search and rescue operation by the Territory Response Section (TRS) and the Palmerston Police Station has been a success with two missing persons safely located.

At approximately 5:30pm yesterday, Police received a report of two males from Palmerston who had become lost whilst out pig shooting in the Berry Springs and Blackmore River area.

The men had been trying to find their way back to their vehicle since earlier that morning before using a mobile phone to contact a relative and raise the alarm.

Members from the Palmerston Police Station travelled to the vicinity and located the missing person's vehicle in the Lawton Road area but could not progress further due to road and wet weather conditions.

TRS members attended and coordinated a search and rescue operation during which a Careflight helicopter was dispatched and used to locate the men 8.2 km from their vehicle. Due to wet weather conditions and a lack of daylight the helicopter was unable to reach the men at the time.

TRS members worked throughout the night to reach the men by quad bike and foot and located them at approximately 4:00 am this morning.

The helicopter returned to the scene this morning and winched the two men to the aircraft before transporting them to Darwin Airport where they were met by St John Ambulance and transported to Royal Darwin Hospital for observation.

The aircraft then returned and picked up the two TRS members at the scene.

It is understood that the men, in their late 30's, had limited water and no food however were in good condition when located.

Police would like to remind the public to be properly prepared when embarking on outdoor activities such as hunting. They advise to ensure you are carrying appropriate navigation equipment, and tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
