Police are investigating the finding of human remains in bushland near Yulara this week.

Police were alerted around 11am on Tuesday after a survey helicopter spotted what appeared to be a body hanging from a tree in scrubland approximately 58 kilometres West North West of Yulara. Police attended the scene and a crime scene was established.

The remains have now been taken to Alice Springs where an autopsy was conducted yesterday afternoon.

Forensic testing has revealed the remains are those of Robert James Nivison, a Queensland man who went missing in January 2007.

Police have alerted the man's family in Queensland.
