Protest - Northern Immigration Detention Centre - Darwin

Police

NT Police are currently at the Northern Immigration Detention Centre in Darwin after a security breach early this morning.

Police were called to the scene at about 6:30 am after it was reported 92 detainees had broken out of the facility through a fence. Upon arrival members were met by a group of Afghan asylum seekers holding banners as part of a peaceful protest.

The protesters are currently sitting in a group outside the fence while police negotiators attempt to achieve a peaceful outcome.

Traffic is currently being diverted around the scene.
