Police warning - Road condition Alice Springs

Police

The River Watch for the Todd River remains at Level B.

There is currently only 4x4 vehicle access at the Palmer River crossing on the Stuart Highway north of Erldunda Road House.

Police have received several reports of stranded parties across the central region.

At about 4:30pm police were alerted to a party of one adult and six children bogged in a Toyota Troop Carrier near Walka waterhole not far from Nyirripi.

An assessment was made and Police are currently on their way to rescue the party.

Northern Territory Emergency Services are currently involved in a rescue at Ernest Giles Road in Alice Springs. Police received a call stating a party of three adults and three children have become stranded on road after two of their 4x4 vehicles became bogged.

A vehicle from a local recovery business attended the scene in an attempt to recover the two cars without success. The NTES personnel from Kings Canyon are currently attending the scene.

Duty Superintendent Bruce Porter says "Police urge the public to stay off gravel roads in areas that have recently experienced significant rain and the road conditions are not known".

"Common sense must prevail as people who travel on unknown roads not only put themselves in danger but also other people who have to attempt to recover them if they get stranded. If there is a definite need to travel on these roads then it is strongly encouraged that people take sufficient food, water and other provisions in the event that they get stranded and have to remain in that situation for a period of time."
