A 21-year-old man will appear in court on stealing charges after he was apprehended by mounted police officers in Alice Springs on Saturday.

Just before 10am Police received a report from staff at ABC Transport in Ghan Road that a male had unlawfully entered the premises and stolen a set of car keys and a cheque book. The offender fled when he was disturbed by staff who gave chase but lost sight of him in the train yard. Police received a report a short time later from two nearby businesses where the man tried to cash cheques from the company. Police were given a description of the man and he was arrested by mounted police near the K Mart Car park a short time later.

He has been charged with:
Unlawful entry
Stealing X 2
Uttering a forged document
Forgery

He has been bailed to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on November 25.

In a separate incident a 21-year-old man was arrested after he crashed the stolen car he was driving. Just after 3am on Sunday police noticed a Holden Commodore, which had earlier been reported as stolen, being driven along Gap Road. They intitiated a pursuit when the driver of the stolen car refused to stop. Police followed the vehicle through the CBD and south along Telegraph Terrace. The driver of the stolen vehicle travelled down Telegraph Terrace at speed before mounting the Tom Brown Roundabout near Heavitree Gap and crashing into a large rock.

The driver was arrested at the scene and has been charged with numerous offences including aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle and drive at a speed and in a manner dangerous.

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Alice Springs magistrates Court today.
