Police message for Kakadu Klash participants

Police

With the three day 'Kakadu Klash' Fishing competition underway, Police urge participants and all other recreational fishermen on the water this weekend to take care of themselves and be considerate of others on the water.

Senior Sergeant Stephen Martin said the Marine and Fisheries Enforcement Section encourages community members to get involved with these community events but take care on the water.

"Fishing competitions and recreational fishing in general are part of the Territory lifestyle and they're great fun so we encourage community members to get involved but we also want to ensure people abide by the law and stay safe".

"Make sure your boat and motor are in good working order and ensure you have the right safety gear. Carry plenty of water and let people know where you are going and when you'll be back".

"Stick to the possession limits, as the penalties of not abiding by these laws could see you losing much more than a fish".

"If you see people breaking the law, report them". "Our fish stocks and their sustainability are precious to all Australians, particularly Territorians, and we need to protect our stocks". Phone the Fish-watch hot line on 1800 891 136 to report suspected illegal fishing activity.

"For those fishing inside Kakadu National Park, be aware of the rules particular to the park. They are posted at the entrance to the park".

"We all enjoy a beer on a fishing trip, but its imperative that the masters of each boat are fully able to safely navigate their vessel at all times". "We still have big storms and squalls around at this time of year and you need to keep a level head when you're on the water"

Some tips from the Marine and Fisheries team to keep safe and lawful this weekend include:
Take your EPIRB with you if you plan to travel outside sheltered waters or beyond 2 nautical miles of the coast. Make sure it's a 406 MHz and not the old 121.5MHz. We recommend every boat carry one regardless.
Consume alcohol in moderation if you intend to have a drink.
Take a fish size chart with you.
Know your possession limits - it's not worth losing your boat.
Be 'croc wise' at all times. Be safe when launching and recovering your boat at ramps.
Ensure you carry a first aid kit and ensure its stocked up and in your boat at all times
Take plenty of water with you and make sure you take food and provisions.
