Police Escort Generator to Alice Springs

Police

NT Police are advising motorists travelling down to Alice Springs over the next month to drive with caution.

A second large generator has arrived in Darwin today and expected to leave for Alice Springs on Sunday.

The machine will be transported by three prime movers, accompanied by police cars and is expected to take five days to reach Alice Springs travelling between 40 and 80kms per hour.

The generator is 70 metres in length, almost 8 metres in height, approximately 5 metres wide and weighs 354 tonnes.

Virginia Read, Acting Superintendent Support Division for the Greater Darwin Regional Command said people should be aware that these are on the move.

"This is the second generator destined for Brewer Estate, the new Alice Springs power station.

"The escort will only travel during daylight hours and will depart the Darwin Weighbridge first thing on Sunday morning. Motorists in Darwin and the rural area should be aware that this will be occurring.

"I am not only forewarning travellers due to the slow pace, but I also ask that if you do come across the convoy, to obey police direction. This is obviously a very large undertaking and we need assistance from the public to make this process as swift and safe as possible" she said.
