The Territory road toll now stands at 26 after the death of a pedestrian in Alice Springs overnight.

The 49-year-old man was hit by a vehicle on Tuncks Causeway just before 9.30pm last night. The 69-year-old female driver of a Ford Falcon station wagon told police she was driving from Barrett Drive when her vehicle hit the man after she failed to see him on the road.

The man was taken to Alice Springs Hospital but died a short time later. Police from the Major Crash Unit are investigating the cause of the death and are appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area between 9.15 and 9.30pm to come forward.
