Operation Vanadium targets Nightcliff

Police

NT Police continue targeting drug offenders and anti-social behaviour within Nightcliff as part of ongoing Operation Vanadium.

The operation was launched at the end of November last year as a way to proactively target drug and anti-social behaviour offenders in and around the John Stokes Square area.

Nine police, five from Casuarina Police Station and four General Duties members from Nightcliff Police Beat, make up the hard working team.

As a result, police dealt with numerous people including:

13 Arrests for significant drug related matters
17 summonsed
9 search warrants executed
4 drug houses notices
10 Drug Infringement Notices
61 searches of the person

Acting Superintendent John Ginnane said that offenders should not become complacent.

"The Nightcliff community have had enough of undesirable elements bringing drugs and anti-social behaviour into the area in which they live and so have we".

"Over the past three months we've seen a stark decline in both drug trafficking and the presence of people who come to buy them and it's due to the considerable efforts of both plain clothed Casuarina Police and the Nightcliff Police Beat.

"Our actions in this area have without any doubt made Nightcliff a safer place, and we will continue to target these obnoxious individuals that reduce quality of life for people who are entitled to walk the streets and enjoy public areas feeling safe.

"Our information is that drugs are no longer available in John Stokes Square and we intend to keep it that way.

"Sometimes the crooks will see us and sometimes they won't, but just because they can't see us doesn't mean we're not there and ready to go" A/Supt Ginnane said.

The operation will continue until the end of March.
