Operation Southern Lockdown –Alice Springs

Hundreds of cars were stopped and liquor and drugs were seized during Operation Southern Lockdown.

The two-day campaign involved members of the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, the Drug Intelligence Unit, Dog Operations Unit and Remote Community Drug Desk., and saw cars pulled over at roadblocks throughout Central Australia.

Detective Senior Constable Adam Van Oosten of the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk said police pulled over 386 cars during the two day operation on July 29 and 30.

Police also searched 32 vehicles and 63 people, while seven people were issued with traffic infringement notices, three were issued with drug infringement notices and five were arrested. Police also seized 61.25 litres of alcohol, a traffickable quantity of cannabis and a quantity of MDMA tablets during the operation.

"The operation came at the end of Operation Hyde which was a two-week operation targeting the illegal trafficking and use of drugs in Central Australia," Det S/C Van Oosten said.

"We will continue to target the trafficking and use of illicit drugs in the community. We would also like to thank those members of the public who assisted us during the campaign by providing information on the supply of drugs in Central Australia."
