Operation RAID - Overview

Police

Operation RAID came to an end earlier this week after Australian and New Zealand Police spent two and a half weeks participating in the campaign.

The operation commenced on 26 November and continued through to 12 December where police from across the country performed high visibility patrols targeting drug and alcohol impaired drivers.

All Northern Territory and THEMIS stations were involved for the entire operation.

During the operation police conducted 10909 roadside breath tests across the Territory resulting in the apprehension of 163 drunk drivers. This result is down 39% compared with last year; however police are concerned the message is still not getting through.

This year NT Police also targeted people driving under the influence of drugs and conducted eleven drug tests resulting in one arrest.

Throughout the operation 851 people were apprehended for miscellaneous traffic offences and police arrested an additional 67 people in relation to other criminal offences.

The operation as a whole resulted in the apprehension of 3506 drunk drivers after 660268 people were tested across Australia and New Zealand.

"Alcohol is consistently in the top three causes of road trauma, along with speeding and failing to wear seatbelts"

"Members from across the Northern Territory worked hard to pull these irresponsibly drivers off our roads over the past two weeks and will continue to target drink drivers over the festive season" said Commander Vanderlaan.
