Operation Fescue results –Central Australia

Police

Police in Central Australia pulled over hundreds of drivers as part of Operation Fescue over the festive season.

Acting Superintendent Darrell Kerr said the operation was aimed at stopping grog and drug-running into remote communities and involved every remote police station in the region.

"During the operation police pulled over 652 vehicles for random breath tests on drivers, " Acting Superintendent Kerr said.

" Four drunk drivers were arrested, four vehicles were defected and 402 litres of alcohol were tipped out.

"As well, nine people will face court for bringing liquor into a prescribed area. Twenty eight traffic infringement notices were also issued, along with one drug infringement notice and 13 cautions.

"This is excellent work by police, and resulted in most of the remote communities having a relatively incident-free festive period. This concerted effort by police in targeting drink drivers and grog-runners certainly resulted in keeping grog out of the communities, and we will continue our efforts into the New Year.

"We have found time and time again that if we can stop grog and drugs entering communities the result is less incidents of domestic violence and other anti-social behaviour."
