Offender Charged – Assault on Police Officer - 4443106

NT Police have charged one of the two alleged offenders in relation to the assaults on two Police Officers in a club in Katherine on New Years Day. The charges are specific to the assault on Constable Kevin Carr who sustained injuries requiring medical assistance at Katherine Hospital. The 28-year-old male alleged offender has been charged with 'assault Police causing harm' and remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court in the morning. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding this incident are continuing including those resulting in the death of Sergeant Brett Meredith. An offender remains in custody in relation to the assault on Sergeant Meredith. Over 40 witnesses have assisted Police with this ongoing investigation to date. While further information and evidence is yet to be gathered, no further information will be released to the public at this time. Police continue to call on anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information to contact them on 131 444 or attend Katherine Police Station. Further updates with regard to the investigation will be provided in due course as will funeral arrangements for the late Sergeant Brett Meredith. Please also be advised of a correction to previously distributed information - Sergeant Brett Meredith leaves behind 5 children, not three.
