Through a National Partnership Agreement between the Northern Territory Government and the Australian Government, the Natural Disaster Resilience Program focuses on building resilience in communities to withstand natural disasters.

As part of this program, the NT Disaster Resilience Emergency Volunteer Fund enables volunteer organisations at the frontline of Territory emergency management to submit grant applications for recruitment, retention, training and equipment that will improve their ability to respond to natural disasters.

Hermannsburg Volunteer Unit Officer, Selwyn Kloeden said these grants are invaluable for their remote unit's emergency management capacity,

"Without grants like this one, our Hermannsberg equipment shed and Indigenous training materials project could not have got off the ground."

Chief Minster Paul Henderson said the Northern Territory Government is a proud partner in this initiative and committed to the continued resourcing of the many volunteers in our community,

"Volunteers in our community are essential in the event of an emergency.

"They give up their time to prepare, protect and provide emergency support for the Territory community with no expectation of reward.

"The Northern Territory Government is committed to supporting the many associated Volunteer Units across all areas of the Territory to ensure they are best equipped, trained and resourced to continue to provide this essential service for the community.

"These grants enable volunteers to submit the details of their proposed projects and the benefit these projects will bring.

"As we head out of the wet season, this is an excellent time for Volunteer Units to reflect on the past few months and consider what resources could further increase their emergency management resources.

"This could range from construction of facilities, training equipment, educational resources, or emergency response equipment." Chief Minister Henderson concluded.

The grants are now open and submissions are required by 5pm, 21 May 2010. For further details on eligibility, application form and how to submit a grant proposal valued up to $50,000, visit funding programs at www.emergency.nt.gov.au.
