Night One, Operation Unite Preliminary Results

Police

Northern Territory Police say they are generally pleased with the first night of Operation Unite with most people having a great night out.

Night one of the weekend Operation saw 164 Police Officers deployed across the Territory's urban centres.

In total, 30 people were arrested for offences including assault, disorderly behaviour, outstanding warrants and high drink driving readings.

There were five assaults in total reported to police, 1 in Alice Springs, Palmerston and Katherine, 2 in Tennant Creek and none in Darwin City.

A further 75 people were taken into protective custody across the Territory for being too intoxicated and determined a risk to themselves or others. This 75 breaks down into 60 persons conveyed to Police Watch Houses, 12 conveyed home to the care of family members and 3 persons taken to a sobering up shelter.

1200 drivers were breath tested overnight detecting 19 drink drivers who were taken off the road.

Acting Commissioner Shayne Maines said while night one was generally pleasing, people drinking and driving remains a concern,

"It was a reasonably good night last night. Most people appeared to be in good spirits, enjoying the last weekend before Christmas.

"There were a few disappointing incidents, largely alcohol related including a total of five assaults across the Territory.

"One in 63 drivers tested were over the legal limit and should not have been behind the wheel of a car. There is no excuse for drink driving. You place yourself and every other road user at risk.

"I hope we don't see a repeat of this tonight. If you are going out, make plans in advance on how you are going to get home or nominate a driver who is not going to drink. If you know you are going to be drinking, you shouldn't drive." Acting Commissioner Maines said.

The Operation will continue tonight, concluding in the early hours of Sunday morning.
