NT Police are investigating an incident where a 23-year-old male was struck by a motor vehicle in Leanyer last night.

At approximately 8:25 pm the male was riding a pushbike towards the intersection of Vanderlin Drive and Leanyer Drive.

As the male attempted to cross the road through flowing traffic he was struck by a Toyota Corolla.

The male was taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital by St John Ambulance where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

A short time before the crash the male was apprehended by an off duty police officer after he allegedly stole items from a store at the Hibiscus Shopping Village.

The male was escorted to store management by the off duty officer. While the male was being spoken to by store management, he turned and ran from the area, exiting the shopping centre on foot.

The matter is under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit and the Casuarina Investigation Unit and is being oversighted by the Ethical and Professional Standards Command.
