Motor vehicle crash - Darwin

Police

Police are concerned for the welfare of the driver of a car involved in a crash early this morning in Darwin.

At approximately 4:00 am a dark coloured Ford Focus hatch with NSW number plates was travelling inbound on the Stuart Highway in Woolner. The vehicle has collided with a light pole and then crashed into a fixed red light/speed camera causing significant damage.

The driver of the vehicle fled before police arrived, leaving the vehicle at the crash scene. The airbags of the vehicle were deployed as a result of the crash and police are concerned the driver may have sustained injuries.

The driver of the vehicle is described as
male
of Aboriginal appearance
mid 20s
about 152cm tall
dark brown/black coloured short hair with brown eyes and olive complexion.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the incident, or know of the whereabouts of the driver, to contact police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

As a result of the initial motor vehicle crash, a small passenger bus collided with a taxi at the same intersection a short time later. Police believe this crash was caused by the inattention of the driver of the bus.

Senior Sergeant Daniel Shean said: "Drivers passing the scene of a motor vehicle crash need to stay focused on the road and traffic ahead to avoid further unnecessary collisions. These crashes were both avoidable."
