Ensure your boat and motor are in good working order and ensure the correct safety equipment is on board.
Take your EPIRB with you if you plan to travel outside sheltered waters or beyond 2 nautical miles of the coast. Make sure it's a 406 MHz and not the old 121.5MHz. Police recommend every boat carry one regardless.
Consume alcohol in moderation if you intend to have a drink.
Take a fish size chart with you.
Know your possession limits - it's not worth losing your boat.
Be 'croc wise' at all times. Be safe when launching and recovering your boat at ramps.
Ensure you carry a first aid kit and ensure it's stocked up and in your boat at all times.
Take plenty of water with you and make sure you take food and provisions; and
Let people know where you are going and when you'll back.

Senior Sergeant Steve Martin says "We all enjoy a beer on a fishing trip, but it's imperative that the masters of each boat are fully able to safely navigate their vessel". "Be aware of your environment, look at the weather forecasts before you launch and be safe at all times"

'Stick to the possession limits, as the penalties for not abiding by these laws could see you losing much more than a fish."

Police urge any one with information in relation to illegal fishing activity to phone the Fish-Watch hotline on 1800 891 136.

"NT Police will be out in force over the coming weeks monitoring fisheries offences and safety gear. We encourage Territorians to out there and have a great time however remember anglers to be mindful of others and abide by the law".
