Marine safety message for the Easter long weekend

Police

Members from the Marine and Fisheries Enforcement Section encourage Territorians planning to go out on the water this long weekend to be well prepared, mindful of others and have a safe Easter.

Police will be patrolling local areas this long weekend and will be checking possession limits, vehicles, trailers, vessels and safety gear.

The Marine and Fisheries Enforcement Section remind recreational boaters of some simple points to keep safe and lawful while out on the water.

Take an EPIRB with you if you plan to travel outside sheltered waters or beyond 2 nautical miles of the coast. Make sure it's a 406 MHz and not the old 121.5MHz. Police recommend every boat carry one regardless
Consume alcohol in moderation if you intend to have a drink
Don't drink and drive, keep safe on the water and safe on the road
Take a fish size chart with you
Know your possession limits - it's not worth losing your boat
Be 'croc wise' at all times and be vigilant when launching and recovering your boat at ramps
Ensure you carry a first aid kit and ensure its stocked up and in your boat at all times

Senior Sergeant Stephen Martin says "Make sure your boat and motor are in good working order and you have sufficient fuel, let people know exactly where you are going and when you'll be back and double check safety gear before you leave".

"We all enjoy a beer on a fishing trip, but it is imperative that the masters of each boat are able to safely navigate their vessel ".

"It is important to stay alert and be prepared for changes in weather conditions. We still have big storms and squalls around at this time of year, and you need to keep a level head when you're on the water"

A commercial crabbing fisherman will be summonsed for recent fisheries related offences detected in the Finniss River region. Police will continue to enforce size and catch limits and will be policing popular fishing areas over the long weekend.

Police urge the public to contact the Fish Watch hotline on 1800 891 136 if you see any one breaking the law or to report suspected illegal fishing activity.
