Man charged for assault police -Arlparra

Police

A 36-year-old man will face court in Alice Springs today following an incident at Arlparra last week.

Police arrested the man in the Alice Springs CBD yesterday in relation to an incident on the Sandover Highway last Thursday night. Police from Arlparra noticed a car pulled over on the side of the road approximately 47 kilometres from the community. When the police officer approached the vehicle he noticed cans of beer in the car and an altercation took place when the officer tried to confiscate them.

Police allege the man then assaulted the police officer and threatened him with a nulla nulla. The police officer drew his gun and called on the man to drop the weapon. When he refused and continued advancing towards the police officer he fired three warning shots into the ground at the man's feet. The man then fled the immediate area but was later airlifted to Alice Springs Hospital in relation to treatment for a pre-existing medical condition. The man was also treated for a minor laceration to his chin which is believed to have resulted from debris from the gunshot ricocheting from the ground.

Following treatment the man was released from hospital on Saturday and was arrested and charged by Alice Springs Police yesterday.

He has been charged with:
Assault police
Being armed with an offensive weapon.

He will appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court today.
