Large grass fire – Tennant Creek

Police

The fire started at about 10:10 am and spread across approximately 350 hectares over 10 hours.

Police evacuated approximately 60 people from Kargaru Town Camp as the fire threatened a nearby business and houses.

A drop in the winds allowed a successful back burning operation to be carried out and the fire was successfully brought under control. Once the area was contained safely, mop up and black out operations were carried out for the remainder of the operation to maintain the fire within the burnt area.

No buildings were damaged and no persons were injured by the blaze.

Leading Fire Fighter Nathan Ferguson said that the reason the fire spread so quickly was due to high winds and the density of bush in the area.

"I really want to praise the efforts of all who attended as this was a very good example of Fire and Rescue officers, volunteers, Police and Bushfires NT working together".

This is the fourth grass fire in Tennant Creek within the past week.

The fires are being treated as suspicious and investigations are continuing.
