Kava seizure - Katherine

Police

Katherine Police have arrested five men in relation to the trafficking of kava into a NT community.

Police apprehended a blue Mitsubishi 4x4 on the Stuart Highway near Edith Falls at about 6:00pm on Saturday. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed 71 kilograms of kava located in suitcases in the rear of the car.

The kava is believed to have been travelling to Ramingining where it would have been sold for an estimated $50 000 to $70 000.

Five men aged 24, 29, 38, 49, and a 50-year-old from Ramingining were arrested and charged with possessing a commercial quantity of kava, they have all been bailed to appear in Katherine Court at a later date.

Duty Superintendent Rob Farmer says "This is a great example of the community working with police to get these drug runners off the street. Katherine Region members are working hard to keep the community safe".
