Jabiru Police warn boat goers

Police

Jabiru Police would like to remind those persons who are using the waterways within the Kakadu National Park to obey the rules of boating.

Sergeant Roger Ilett, OIC of the Jabiru Police Station urged people to be cautious on the water.

"It is the same as driving on the highways - know your rules and regulations, boat to the conditions at the time and be considerate of other recreational boaters.

"There have been two incidents over the last two weeks within our local waterways. The first was a collision between two vessels on the South Alligator River that resulted in injuries sustained to the passengers. It is now being investigated by the Marine and Fisheries Enforcement Section.

"The second incident involved a vessel overturning on the East Alligator River on Saturday.

"It is also a timely reminder to advise boaters that there are crocodiles prevalent in all waterways. Be extremely careful; it has been thirty years since crocodiles have been hunted; they are no longer intimidated by human activity. It has become apparent on the South Alligator and East Alligator Rivers that vessels are becoming identified as an easy source of food. Hooked fish, mainly barramundi, are on occasion being taken by crocodiles as they are being retrieved from the water. I would recommend that long handled landing nets be utilised. The practise of releasing barramundi by holding them by hand until they are revived should be reconsidered" he said.

The Northern Territory Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport urges the public to BE CROCWISE and remember that croc danger is real so don't risk your life. For more information go to www.nt.gov.au/becrocwise.
