NT Police is investigating an alleged breach of the agency's computing and communications policy.

The Commander of the Ethical and Professional Standards Command, Colleen Gwynne, said the investigation centred on the alleged distribution of emails containing inappropriate material.

"Should our investigation confirm there has been inappropriate use of the email system, we will then determine what action to take against those who may have been involved," Commander Gwynne said.

"We take these matters very seriously and expect both our sworn and civilian employees to exercise the highest levels of probity and professionalism in complying with agency policies," she said.

No further information will be released until the conclusion of the investigation.
