Police

A 25-year-old man is in custody following an incident near the swimming pool in the early hours of this morning.

Police allege the man is one of two offenders who followed two 20-year-old women along Gap Road at about 2.30am. The women told police they tried to get a taxi after having been out for the night in the CBD, but when none was available they decided to walk back to their backpackers accommodation along Gap Road.

The pair soon noticed two males following them so they turned right into Achilpa Street and then into Telegraph Terrace. The women then starting running as the men continued coming after them. One of the females ran into the car park of the town swimming pool and the two offenders followed her. The other female continued running along Telegraph Terrace.

The two males then demanded money and threatened the victim. They then indecently assaulted her before she was able to flee up Speed Street and wave down a security guard.

The two offenders are described as being of Aboriginal appearance with one about 165 cm tall with a skinny build. He was wearing a black t-shirt and black track pants and was about 16-year-old. The second male was about 167cm tall, but no further description was available.

Police today arrested a 25-year-old man in relation to the attack. He is expected to be charged later today.
