Hoon car impounded – Alice Springs - 4480102

Police

A 16-year-old boy had his car impounded after police caught him driving at 120 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone in Alice Springs last night.

Just after 9pm police were travelling south along the Stuart Highway near Head Street when they clocked an oncoming vehicle travelling at 105 kilometres an hour in a 60 zone. The police car turned to apprehend the vehicle but the driver turned left into Head Street where he was clocked at 120 kilometres per hour ion a 60 zone. Police activated their lights and sirens and apprehended the Ford Falcon sedan as it turned into Woods Terrace.

The occupants of the car were the 16-year-old male driver and three other males aged 18, 16 and 19. An inspection of the vehicle found one of the rear tyres was completely bald. The driver will be summonsed to appear in court for a number of traffic offences.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said the vehicle was defected and then impounded for 48 hours under the Territory's anti-hooning legislation.

"This is the second car we've impounded in the past two weeks, and it's very disappointing people don't seem to be getting the message," Sgt Robertson said.

"What's even more worrying is this was a P-plate driver, driving an un-roadworthy car, on wet roads, in a residential area at high speeds. This is a recipe for disaster and it was just as well police apprehended him before it ended in tragedy.

"We will continue to put these cars and drivers off the roads until these stupid drivers get it. If you think you're impressing your mates by this irresponsible behaviour, consider how impressed they'll be when your car gets impounded - and it will!"
