Honours announced - Australia Day Awards - 2010

Police

Two Northern Territory Police officers and a Northern Territory Emergency Service volunteer will be recognised in today's Australia day honours announcements.

NTES Volunteer Joanne Killmister, Sergeant Shane Taylor and Detective Sergeant Wendy Schultz will be the three members from NTPFES recognised nationwide for their efforts among the community.

John McRoberts, Commissioner and CEO NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services said he was impressed with all of their achievements.

Ms Joanne Killmister, a volunteer with the NT Emergency Service was recognised, having served continuously with the Maningrida Volunteer Unit since joining in July 2000.

"Joanne has dedicated herself to gaining nationally recognised qualifications in training and emergency management disciplines including Road Accident Rescue, Storm Damage, General Rescue and Small Boat Handlers."

In 2006, Ms Killmister was appointed Unit Officer of Maningrida.

"Through passionate leadership and enormous personal effort, Ms Killmister has developed a cohesive, well trained and responsive Emergency Service Volunteer Unit that supports the community.

"Joanne and her team are a vital part of the emergency response in Maningrida, assisting police with road crashes, marine incidents, house fires and cyclone preparation and response.

"Ms Killmister is an exemplary volunteer with an enormous passion and drive who selflessly gives her time to provide an emergency service to a remote area of the Northern Territory" Commissioner and CEO John McRoberts said.

Det Sgt Schultz is currently the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Asset Forfeiture Unit having commenced her career with the Northern Territory Police Force on 02 October 1978.

During her career Ms Schultz has served in a variety of positions including General Duties policing, communications, criminal investigations, major crime and sexual crime units.

Commissioner and CEO McRoberts said Wendy is recognised for her tireless and committed contribution as an investigator and her commitment, compassion, empathy, communication and professionalism whilst conducting her work.

"She always leads by example and promotes honesty, fairness, equity, loyalty and integrity within the workplace" he said.

Wendy also received a National Service Medal in 1993, a 25 year National Service Clasp in 1998, a Police Service Medal in 1999 and a Commissioners Outstanding Leadership Medal in 2007.

Sergeant Shane Taylor, OIC of the Wadeye (Port Keats) Police Station, was also recognised for his efforts.

Sergeant Taylor began his career with NT Police in January 1988 and has since worked in a variety of places across the Territory, including Lajamanu, Elliot and Ali-Curung.

He took up his current position as OIC of Wadeye in 2005.

"Sgt Taylor leads his team at Port Keats with courage, honesty, inspiration and is well respected by the members he serves and the community in which he lives.

"He has established a high degree of trust and respect between him, the community elders and local residents" said Commissioner and CEO McRoberts.

Shane was awarded the NT Police Service Medal in 1999, a National Service Medal in 2009 and both he and his members received a Commissioners Certificate of Appreciation in 2006 for their commitment in tackling crime and disorderly behaviour within the community.
