Hazmat incident - Mitchell Street - Darwin City

Police

NT Police and the Fire and Rescue Service evacuated a Darwin City office building this morning after receiving reports of a suspicious item.

At about 9:20am today a staff member began to open a parcel she received in the mail, when she noticed an unknown substance on the outside of the package. The 38-year-old woman immediately contacted authorities, who arrived on the scene a short time later.

The entire building was evacuated and police established a cordon, while members of the NTFRS Hazmat Team secured the item and safely removed it from the office for testing.

Test results have since revealed the substance was not hazardous.

Police are no longer treating the incident as suspicious and no offences have been detected.

The building was declared safe and reopened at 3:40 pm.
