NT Police and the Fire and Rescue Service attended Perkins Shipping on Francis Bay Drive in Darwin City after receiving reports of a noxious odour at the yard.

A small satchel containing magnesium phosphate in one of the international containers was determined to be the cause of the problem. The substance is believed to be used as a pesticide.

One person was conveyed to a local medical clinic for assessment after being exposed to the substance.

Fire fighters stayed at the scene for about an hour until the incident was safely contained.

WorkSafe will investigate the matter.
