Police

Police seized a large quantity of alcohol and drugs following a special operation targeting those bringing illicit substances into remote communities.

The special operation involved members of the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk (SAID), Drug Intelligence Unit , the Dog Operations Unit and Hermannsburg Police members. Road blocks were set up on Larapinta Drive on Saturday in an effort to prevent alcohol and drugs being transported into Hermannsburg during the football semi-finals at the weekend.

Detective Senior Constable Adam Van Oosten said police pulled over 75 cars and seized more than 169 litres of alcohol and 29 deal bags of Cannabis weighing 17.9 grams.

Four people were arrested for a range of offences from having outstanding warrants to high range drink driving and driving disqualified.

Two people will also be summonsed for possession and supply of Cannabis and driving unlicensed, while another two were issued with drug infringement notices for possession of Cannabis.

"It's obviously very disappointing to find people are still trying to get grog and drugs into communities, however, we hope that with our continued special operations targeting these offenders people will start to get the message that if they try to bring these substances into communities we will be out there, and they will have their grog and drugs seized. Then they also face the consequences of their actions by being placed before the courts or by being issued fines and also possibly having their veihicles seized.

"Anyone with information about illicit grog or drug running into communities is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
