Grass Fire - East Arm

Police

NT Police and Fire and Rescue were called to a large grass fire at East Arm at about 10:00 pm last night.

The fire, which burnt about five hectares of bushland in the vicinity of Mendis, Nebo and Hamaura Roads, is alleged to have been started by people letting off fireworks.

NT Fire and Rescue personnel were able to control and extinguish the fire, which threatened large fuel drums in the area.

No buildings or private property received damage as a result of the fire.

Police investigators located a number of expended fireworks and a plastic bag in the vicinity and seized them for forensic examination.

Duty Superintendent Bob Rennie said the actions of these people could have had serious consequences.

"If this fire had reached the fuel tanks it could have caused serious property damage and ultimately life" he said.
