Four arrests in traffic pursuit - Darwin

Police

NT Police have arrested two male and two female youths in relation to stealing and unlawful use of a motor vehicle in Wagaman this morning.

Police received reports shortly after 4:00 am of youths kicking in a door and breaking into a fish and chip shop and then driving off in a white Mitsubishi Magna.

Police members were on their way to the scene when they sighted the suspect vehicle on Rapid Creek Road containing four persons and attempted a traffic apprehension.

The driver failed to obey the directions of police and the vehicle was pursued in the vicinity of Rapid Creek, Trower Road, Rothdale Road and Moil before being apprehended at the intersection of McMillans Road and Amy Johnson Avenue.

Towards the end of the pursuit, the offender slowed the vehicle to an almost stationary state, at which point two marked police vehicles parked in front of it. The offenders' vehicle then re-accelerated and rammed both police vehicles causing moderate damage before driving onto a grassed verge in a further attempt to elude police before coming to a stop.

No police officers or offenders were injured.

All four offenders attempted to run from police but were caught shortly after.

The 21-year-old male driver, a 23-year-old male and two 15-year-old-female passengers remain in police custody and are expected to face charges later today relating to unlawfully using a motor vehicle, unlawful entry and stealing offences.

The driver may face further charges involving exceeding the prescribed blood alcohol content whilst driving and other traffic matters.

The white Mitsubishi Magna had earlier been reported stolen from a residence on Francis Street in Milliner.

"These arrests demonstrate that police are making a significant dent in the commission of property-related crime," Detective Senior Sergeant John Ginnane said.

"Police will continue to pursue avenues of enquiry and have arrested a considerable number of people in the past two weeks thanks to reports from members of the public.

"We ask that the public help us to help them by securing their personal property and by reporting any suspicious incident, person or vehicle to police immediately on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000".
