Five year old girl attacked by crocodile

Police

Police were advised at 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon that a 5 year old girl had been attacked by a crocodile at Caledon Bay, around 120km south of Nhulunbuy.

The child's 34 year old father was with her at the beach and witnessed the attack. At this stage it is not clear what exactly has occurred, other than it occurred in shallow water, the injury appears to be from the rear claw of the croc and it is believed the crocodile was between 6 and 7 foot in length.

She was conveyed to Gove Hospital for treatment and remains in a stable condition. Police stayed with Parks and Wildlife and searched the area last night but did not locate the crocodile.

Territory Duty Superintendent Bob Harrison said that the young girl was very lucky that the encounter only resulted in cuts to her leg.

"This is timely reminder for the public to be croc wise and to obey crocodile warning signs. Never swim in water where crocodiles may live, even if there are no warning signs present," said Supt Harrison.
