Fishermen Rescued - Cape Hotham

Police

Water Police have rescued a father and son near Cape Hotham overnight after they became lost and ran out of fuel.

Police received a report of a beacon activation shortly after 06:00 pm last night. The Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra launched a Care Flight Helicopter and a Rescue Dornier Aircraft to the area and located the men with their 4.5 metre tinnie.

Water Police launched the Police Patrol Vessel 'Beagle Gulf' and travelled to the area and collected the men with their boat. Police then assisted the men to reach their original destination of Leeders Creek.

It is believed the men, aged 32 and 62, were returning from a fishing trip at Melville Island when they became lost. The men ran out of fuel while attempting to find their way to Leeders Creek.

The men activated their emergency beacon just before night fall.

Officer In Charge of the Water Police Section, Stephen Martin, said this incident highlights the importance of emergency beacons.

"Because the men had the right equipment on board, including a 406 Mhz beacon, we were able to quickly locate and assist them.

"On a cautionary note however, anyone planning an extended voyage in an unfamiliar area should carry and know how to use either a GPS or a nautical chart and compass.

"Every boat on the water should ensure their safety by carrying the correct equipment at all times," Senior Sergeant Martin said.
