Fisheries Offences Detected - Commercial and Recreational Fishermen – Port Roper

Between Sunday 19and Wednesday 22 September, the Northern Territory Water Police Section conducted Marine and Fisheries related compliance and enforcement operations in the Port Roper region checking on the activities of commercial and recreational fishermen in that area. The operation has resulted in a commercial mud crab fisherman being summonsed for a number of alleged offences under the Mud Crab Management Plan after being found in possession of: * 185 commercially unsuitable mud crabs * 38 non compliant pots * 98 undersized mud crabs The man's vessel, a commercial Mud Crab fishing vessel valued at approximately $75,000, has also been seized. Additionally, four recreational fishermen are to be summonsed for being in possession of 32 Barramundi (12 over the recreational limit). Water police seized the catch, two chest freezers, two esky's and fishing gear allegedly used by the fishermen. The Officer in Charge of the Northern Territory Water Police, Senior Sergeant Stephen Martin said, "These two incidents are a timely reminder for both the commercial and recreational sectors to ensure that the catch and possession rules are adhered to. "I would ask all local and visiting fishermen to make sure they are fully aware of the possession limits for vulnerable species such as Barramundi, Mud Crabs, Golden Snapper, Black Jewfish, Spanish Mackerel and other managed species and stick to the possession limits.
